It was young Iranian women who first took to the streets after the killing of Jina Mahsa Amini in September 2022. Many defied the regime by tearing off their veils and casting them into the flames. For months, the protests that followed were carried forward by Generation Z — the daughters, sons, and grandchildren of those who, back in 1997, had voted in large numbers for Mohammad Khatami in the presidential elections. His victory did not democratize the theocratic system, but it did open the way to a series of reforms that gave new momentum to civil society, despite the harsh backlash of the regime’s hardliners. The most recent wave of unrest stems, in part, from the awareness of rights acquired during that season of reforms. To understand what is happening in Iran today, one must look back to those events, which the author witnessed firsthand as a correspondent for the ANSA news agency. In the updated edition of her memoir, the experiences of the protagonists of change intertwine with her own, revealing a multifaceted and often contradictory reality.

Le giovani iraniane sono state le prime a scendere in piazza dopo l'uccisione di Jina Mahsa Amini, nel settembre 2022. In molte hanno sfidato il regime strappandosi i veli e dandoli alle fiamme. Le manifestazioni che si sono susseguite per mesi erano guidate dalla Generazione Z, ossia da figlie, figli e nipoti di coloro che votarono in massa per Mohammad Khatami alle presidenziali del 1997. La sua elezione consentì, non una democratizzazione del sistema teocratico, ma una serie di aperture che dettero un forte slancio alla crescita della società civile, nonostante la dura reazione dei 'falchi' del regime. L'ultima ondata di proteste è il frutto anche della consapevolezza dei propri diritti acquisita durante quella stagione di riforme. Per capire quanto accade oggi in Iran occorre dunque tornare agli eventi di allora, eventi di cui l'autrice è stata una testimone privilegiata nella sua veste di corrispondente dell'agenzia ANSA. Pendant des mois, les manifestations qui ont suivi ont été menées par la Génération Z — filles, fils et petits-enfants de celles et ceux qui, en 1997, avaient massivement voté pour Mohammad Khatami à la présidentielle. Son élection n’a pas démocratisé le système théocratique, mais elle a ouvert la voie à une série de réformes qui ont insufflé un nouvel élan à la société civile, malgré la répression brutale des « faucons » du régime. La dernière vague de révolte est en partie le fruit de la conscience des droits née au cours de cette période de réformes. Pour comprendre ce qui se joue aujourd’hui en Iran, il faut revenir à ces événements — dont l’auteure a été la témoin privilégiée, en tant que correspondante de l’agence italienne ANSA. Dans l’édition actualisée de ses mémoires, les parcours des protagonistes du changement s’entrelacent au sien, dévoilant une réalité aux multiples facettes et souvent contradictoire.
