Oscar Bie, einer der bedeutendsten Feuilletonisten seiner Zeit, beschreibt in seinem 1902 erschienen kulturhistorischen Essay 'Der gesellschaftliche Verkehr' den großstädtischen Verkehr als ein Schauspiel, das in seiner Gesamtheit dem Ballett und der Symphonie ebenbürtig sei: 'Ein jeder Fußgänger mit dem Rhythmus seines Naturells oder seines augenblicklichen Geschäftes, ein jeder Privatwagen, das Automobil, das Rad, die Mietsdroschke, die öffentlichen Fuhrwerke, die Lastwagen, alles, was nach dem Stil der Zeit Verkehrsmittel ist, oder was vom Geschmack des Einzelnen dazu gewählt wird, verbindet sich zu diesem unbeschreiblichen Konzert.' Der Essay erschien 1905 als eigenständiges kleines Buch, das diesem E-Book als Vorlage diente.
