Oswald Spengler nacque a Blankenburg (Harz) il 29 maggio 1880. Studiò scienze naturali e matematica a Monaco, Berlino e Halle, e per tre anni fu professore di queste materie in un ginnasio di Amburgo. Si trasferì poi a Monaco, dove si dedicò privatamente agli studi e dove morì l’8 maggio 1936. Fece parte di varie organizzazioni scientifiche e in particolare, come membro del comitato di fondazione, del Forschungsinstitut für Kulturmorphologie, divenuto poi Frobenius-Institut. Tra le sue opere: Der Untergang des Abendlandes (Il tramonto dell’Occidente), 1918 e 1922; Preussentum und Sozialismus (Prussianesimo e socialismo), 1920; Der Mensch und die Technik (L’uomo e la tecnica), 1931; Jahre der Entscheidung (Anni decisivi), 1933.
