"Atlantida" (L'Atlantide) is undoubtedly Pierre Benoit’s magnum opus and a cornerstone of his artistic trajectory. The novel is set in the French Algerian Sahara and follows the journey of two French officers, André de Saint-Avit and Jean Morhange, as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of their comrades. Their quest leads them to the hidden kingdom of Atlantis, ruled by the alluring and enigmatic Queen Antinea. Antinea, a descendant of the rulers of the mythical Atlantis, is a complex character who embodies both beauty and danger. She keeps a cave wall with niches for her lovers, who are embalmed in gold after their demise. The novel explores themes of obsession, power, and the clash between civilization and primal instincts. Benoit’s vivid descriptions of the Sahara Desert and his ability to evoke a sense of mystery and wonder make "Atlantida" a masterpiece of adventure literature.
