Shalom Aleichem, che in ebraico significa «la pace sia con voi», è lo pseudonimo dello scrittore e drammaturgo ebreo Shalom Rabinowitz (1859-1916), tra i fondatori della letteratura yiddish e tra i suoi maggiori umoristi. Paragonato a Twain, Dickens e Gogol, nel suo peregrinare tra l’Ucraina, la Svizzera e gli Stati Uniti scrisse novelle, racconti satirici, romanzi, opere teatrali, monologhi e storie per ragazzi sulla vita quotidiana negli shtetl, le comunità ebraiche dell'Europa orientale destinate a essere spazzate via dal nazismo. Le opere di Aleichem sono state tradotte in molte lingue e rappresentate nei teatri. Il musical del 1964 Il violinista sul tetto, tratto dalle storie che hanno per protagonista Tevye il lattaio, è stata la prima pièce in lingua inglese sul mondo ebraico dell’Europa orientale ad avere un grandissimo successo.
