Curiosamente, quest'opera autobiografica di un vero e proprio genio del periodo illuminista, uscì inizialmente in lingua francese nel 1792 e soltanto intorno al 1868 fu divulgata in inglese. La storia che leggerete è in effetti l'autobiografia di Benjamin Franklin, ma somiglia più a un romanzo di avventura scritto da Mark Twain: la mente brillante, un'infanzia povera, i primi lavori come apprendista presso la tipografia del fratello, un viaggio di formazione a Londra, il successo anche economico e le esperienze nei campi più disparati, dalla politica alla sperimentazione scientifica. Con una prosa asciutta e ricca di aneddoti, arricchita anche da acute osservazioni sui comportamenti umani, può essere letto come uno dei primi esempi di self-made man frutto del grande sogno americano, ma anche come manuale per raggiungere il successo. Rimane, dal punto di vista storico, anche una delle opere più significative per meglio comprendere le origini della moderna mentalità a stelle e striscie. All'interno - come in tutti i volumi Fermento - gli "Indicatori" per consentire al lettore un agevole viaggio dentro il libro.
