Lo stesso Voltaire presentava ai lettori il Dizionario dicendo: “Un resoconto che rendo a me stesso, seguendo l’ordine alfabetico, di tutto ciò che devo pensare su questo mondo e sull’altro Ho cercato di unire il dilettevole all'utile, senza avere altro merito e altra parte in quest'opera fuorché la scelta. Le persone d'ogni condizione troveranno di che istruirsi divertendosi. Questo libro non richiede una lettura continuata; ma, a qualunque pagina lo si apra, si troverà di che riflettere. Il tutto a uso mio e, forse, dopo che sarò morto, delle persone perbene.” All'interno - come in tutti i volumi Fermento - gli "Indicatori" per consentire al lettore un agevole viaggio dentro il libro.

This book does not demand continuous reading; but at whatever place one opens it, one will find matter for reflection. The most useful books are those of which readers themselves compose half; they extend the thoughts of which the germ is presented to them; they correct what seems defective to them, and they fortify by their reflections what seems to them weak.It is only really by enlightened people that this book can be read; the ordinary man is not made for such knowledge; philosophy will never be his lot. Those who say that there are truths which must be hidden from the people, need not be alarmed; the people do not read; they work six days of the week, and on the seventh go to the inn. In a word, philosophical works are made only for philosophers, and every honest man must try to be a philosopher, without pluming himself on being one.This alphabet is extracted from the most estimable works which are not commonly within the reach of the many; and if the author does not always mention the sources of his information, as being well enough known to the learned, he must not be suspected of wishing to take the credit for other people's work, because he himself preserves anonymity, according to this word of the Gospel: "Let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth."

SabatiniTraduzione di Maurizio GrassoIl Dizionario filosofico fu pubblicato per la prima volta anonimo a Ginevra nel 1764, quando Voltaire aveva ormai settant’anni. Il progetto dell’opera era nato nel 1752, a Potsdam, durante una visita del filosofo a Federico II di Prussia, e per molti anni Voltaire aveva continuato a scrivere o a raccogliere articoli sui più svariati argomenti. Arricchito attraverso molte edizioni successive, il Dizionario è una raccolta di voci riguardanti la filosofia in senso molto ampio. La presente traduzione è stata condotta sul testo stabilito da Raymond Naves, che ha riportato il Dizionario alla sua forma originale, sfrondandolo dalle aggiunte e dagli appesantimenti che, dopo la morte di Voltaire, erano stati introdotti dai vari editori.VoltaireFrançois-Marie Arouet, che nel 1718 assumerà lo pseudonimo di Voltaire, nacque a Parigi nel 1694. Nel 1718 era già un celebre tragediografo; nel 1726, come conseguenza di un duello, conobbe la Bastiglia e l’esilio in Inghilterra; dopo una vita intensa condotta tra fughe, amicizie regali, studi e impegno civile contro l’intolleranza e l’ingiustizia, nell’aprile del 1778 tornò a Parigi ma morì quasi subito, il 30 maggio 1778. Scrisse opere storiche, poemi epici, libelli polemici, versi d’occasione, prose filosofiche e letterarie.
