Come statista, Rabin avanzò le prime proposte di pace nel 1989, quando era ministro della Difesa, ma fu il suo programma elettorale basato su una pace legata alla sicurezza a fargli vincere le elezioni del 1992 e ad avviare Israele sulla via della pace. Il libro analizza l'ascesa dell'opposizione della destra estremista, l'azione politica dell'ebraismo americano, le complesse relazioni di Rabin con Yasser Arafat, con il re di Giordania Hussein, con Assad di Siria e con il suo collega nella costruzione della pace Shimon Peres.
