For Gödel’s theorems there are truths that escape axiomatic systems. This phenomenon in mathematical logic is called incompleteness. This book deals precisely with mathematical truths that axiomatic systems fail to capture. In the first chapters the incompleteness of Peano’s arithmetic is addressed, Gödel’s sentences cannot be captured by the principles of Peano’s arithmetic. Thus in this book it is possible to see how Gödel was able to construct an arithmetic sentence that says about itself: I am unprovable. In addition to Gödel’s sentences, there are other truths such as Goodstein’s theorem and the finite extension of Ramsey’s theorem which Peano’s axioms fail to prove. In the second part of the book we will see that in modern set theory there is a sentence, namely the Continuum Hypothesis, that Zermelo-Fraenkel axiomatic system fails to prove. For a result of Gödel (1938) and a result of Cohen (1963) the Continuum Hypothesis is independent of the axioms of Zermelo-Fraenkel. These axioms fail to prove the Continuum Hypothesis. In the last part of the book we will see the attempt of Hugh Woodin to prove the Continuum Hypothesis that is called Woodin’s program.

Il Teorema di Dio di Gödel nasce da esigenze di carattere esistenziale e religioso. Per comprendere la sua prova ontologica di Dio, occorre tenere a mente come Gödel avesse sempre avuto il desiderio di trovare un ordine logico-matematico da porre a fondamento dell'esistenza dell'universo. Un tale ordine gli sembrava fosse assicurato solo dalla necessità logica dell'esistenza di Dio. L'ente divino doveva essere quella verità che non si basa su calcoli umani ed è, quindi, assoluta e non relativa. Gödel riprende la dimostrazione di Leibniz del seguente condizionale: se l'esistenza di Dio è possibile, allora l'esistenza di Dio è necessaria. Come Leibniz che si discosta dalla prova ontologica di Cartesio dimostrando che l'esistenza di Dio è possibile, cosí il matematico moravo fornisce una prova che Dio forma un sistema logicamente coerente da cui segue per modus ponens che Dio esiste in modo necessario. EMANUELE GAMBETTA ha conseguito il dottorato di Ricerca alla Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in Filosofia della Matematica con votazione 70/70 e lode. Poi è stato studente ricercatore all'università di Barcellona dove ha partecipato ai seminari al centro di teoria degli insiemi. Infinity is a fascinating subject. What do we mean when we use the concept of infinity? What did the ancient Greeks mean? What do modern mathematicians mean when they use infinity in their calculations? What are the debates of contemporary philosophers of mathematics regarding the infinite? This book, starting from Aristotle and Plato, tries to retrace the steps that led to contemporary conceptions of infinity. The book also deals with the first mathematical problem of the twentieth century on Hilbert's list with no solution that has correlations with the concept of infinity. Is the mathematical universe unique or do we have infinite parallel universes with different truths? This is a question related to the concept of infinity and the book tries to answer it. The goal of this book is to make the mathematics of infinity accessible by showing the most incredible mathematical results of the last century and deepening the themes of contemporary debates in mathematics and philosophy regarding infinity. EMANUELE GAMBETTA obtained his PHD in philosophy of mathematics from the Scuola Normale Superiore with cum laude mark. He was a visiting research student at the university of Barcelona where he participated in the seminars of the set theory center. He has been a visiting graduate student in many universities around the world.
