Nel 1863 Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, architetto noto per i suoi restauri di edifici medievali francesi, viene nominato professore di Storia dell’Arte ed Estetica all’École des Beaux-Arts di Parigi. Fervente antiaccademico, è osteggiato a tal punto da alcuni colleghi che già a marzo del 1864 si dimette. Decide comunque di pubblicare il ciclo di lezioni programmato, nella convinzione che l’architettura non sia una dottrina per eruditi, ma un aspetto basilare della vita umana. Nascono così le Conversazioni sull’architettura, opera in due volumi sullo sviluppo storico della disciplina. Le civiltà dell’arte è la «prima conversazione», nella quale l’autore enuncia la propria tesi di fondo, radicale per l’epoca: ogni rassegna delle forme artistiche dei popoli è inutile se non si comprendono le ragioni di esistenza e i rapporti reciproci di quelle forme all’interno dei loro sistemi culturali di appartenenza. Ciò lo porta a sostenere che l’arte è una «necessità dello spirito», le cui differenti manifestazioni nelle diverse civilizzazioni non devono far perdere di vista il carattere universale. Contro il luogo comune che lo liquida come un restauratore intransigente, Viollet-le-Duc è stato piuttosto un fine pensatore, di vaste conoscenze teoriche e pratiche, sempre attento a conciliare i dati concreti con il metodo razionale.
