C’est un pittoresque et imposant paysage à la fois que présente le port d’Elanchovi, sur la côte de Biscaye. Quand, à mon retour d’Amérique, poussé par l’un des hasards d’une vie d’aventures, je débarquai un jour à Elanchovi, ce ne fut cependant pas sur le paysage que se fixa surtout mon attention. Ce fut sur un ancien château, le seul peut-être qui existe en Espagne, qui dressait ses toits d’ardoise et ses girouettes gothiques au sommet de la plus haute falaise. J’avais reconnu, dans ce vieux château, l’endroit où avait commencé une dramatique histoire qui m’avait été racontée dans les forêts de l’État de Sonora, peu d’années avant mon retour du Mexique.La ceinture de rochers sur lesquels s’élève ce manoir enserre le petit port d’Elanchovi, protégé par une jetée de pierres de taille.À l’endroit où ce môle, peu élevé, se joint à la terre, on commence à gravir les falaises disposées en gradins naturels et sur lesquelles s’échelonnent en amphithéâtre les maisons du port.
