Siccome alcuno tra i miei lettori potrebbe supporre che io abbia attinto qualche mia osservazione ad altre opere del genere, sento il dovere di prevenire costui che s'ingannerebbe.Alcuno tra i miei lettori, altresì, potrebbe avere un'opinione affatto diversa dalla mia sulla interpretazione di certi sogni ed io son pronto a convenire che le sue spiegazioni contraddittorie potrebbero meritare tanto credito quanto le mie.Dico solo che anche a me sarebbe stato agevole prestare sempre ai sogni quel significato ch'essi non hanno e rendermi aggradevole ai più con la lusinga. Forse avrei agito così se nei miei lavori non avessi cercato che la notorietà e l'opulenza, come avviene dei commedianti e in genere di tutti coloro che fanno commercio della loro parola e del loro sapere.Ma questo non è il mio mestiere. Io non ho cercato mai altro che la verità, quella verità che riposa sulle-solide basi di prove indiscutibili e nel cercarla, nell'analizzarla, nel controllarla, ho chiamato sempre in mio soccorso il mio raziocinio. Né credo illudermi se suppongo aver acquistato qualche esperienza nell'interpretazione dei sogni, perché tutti i miei giorni e le mie notti, durante tutta la mia vita, io li ho spesi a meditare e a rendere penetrabile il mio spirito a questa scienza.
