Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor, usually considered the progenitor of modern sculpture. But actually Rodin did not set out to revolutionary against the past. He was educated traditionally and desired academic respect, although he was never accepted into Paris's leading school of art. Many of his most notable sculptures were severely criticized during his lifetime. They clashed with the predominant figure sculpture tradition, in which works were decorative, formulaic, or highly thematic. Rodin's most original work departed from traditional themes of mythology and allegory, modeled the human body with realism, and celebrated individual character. It was the freedom and creativity with which Rodin used these practices – along with his activation surfaces of sculptures through traces of his own touch and with his more open attitude toward bodily pose, sensuality, and non-realistic surface – that marked Rodin's re-making of traditional 19th century sculptural techniques into the prototype for modern sculpture.

English writer and visual artist Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti had a marked tendency for mysticism in a range of forms. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais, and was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. A faith in the option of communicating with the dead may have provoked him on his wife's death to have several of his love poems enclosed in her coffin. No matter what the fact of his poetry, it is by his painting quite than by his poems that Rossetti has a position as a enormous mystic, for despite his fondness for precise handling, most of his pictures are substantially of a mystical personality. John William Waterhouse was an English painter famous for working in the Pre-Raphaelite style. His early works were not Pre-Raphaelite in nature, but were of classical themes in the spirit of Alma-Tadema and Frederic Leighton. He painted several decades after the break-up of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. Borrowing stylistic influences not only from the earlier Pre-Raphaelites but also from his contemporaries, the Impressionists, his artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek mythology and Arthurian legend. John William Waterhouse created several high quality paintings during his life time.
