Negli ultimi decenni si è assistito ad un aumento della quantità di informazione statistica prodotta su tematiche oggetto di analisi della sociologia. Allo stesso tempo, la ricerca sociale ha espresso un'attenzione più consapevole ed esigente al patrimonio statistico. Tuttavia le fonti statistiche ambiscono a soddisfare i bisogni informativi non solo dei sociologi, ma anche di altri studiosi della società, che posseggono conoscenze diverse e le interrogano con obiettivi dissimili. Da qui l'esigenza di creare un'occasione di confronto interdisciplinare sulla valorizzazione critica delle fonti statistiche e sui loro usi nella costruzione della conoscenza dei fenomeni sociali. Il convegno organizzato a Napoli dalla Sezione di Metodologia dell'AIS nel 2012 ha rappresentato tale occasione. Il volume raccoglie in forma breve tutti i contributi che hanno alimentato il dibattito di quei giorni.
