Maria Edgeworth, nata a Black Bourton (Oxfordshire) nel 1767, a quindici anni si trasferì con la famiglia a Edgeworthstown, in Irlanda, una delle proprietà di famiglia. Studiosa di pedagogia, scrisse assieme al padre l'impegnativo Practical Education (1789), testo pionieristico nel campo dell'educazione, numerose novelle morali per l'infanzia e diversi romanzi di vita irlandese - Il Castello Rackrent (1800), L'assenteista (The absentee, 1812), Ormond (1817), Helen (1834) -. considerati dalla critica una tappa fondamentale nel processo di gestazione della letteratura irlandese in lingua inglese. Morì a Edgeworthstown nel 1848.
