Letterato e critico, poeta e artista, scrisse un gran numero di romanzi, saggi, testi teatrali, caratterizzati da una scrittura estremamente eclettica. I suoi scritti biografici (ricordiamo, oltre alle Confessioni, i Ricordi degli Impressionisti del 1906) documentano in modo prezioso l’atmosfera intellettuale dell’Europa fin-de-siècle.
