Nata a Londra nel 1810, orfana di entrambi i genitori, venne allevata dalla famiglia della zia. Nel 1832 sposò il pastore William Gaskell, molto impegnato nel sociale. La loro casa divenne un luogo di incontro per una cerchia di intellettuali anticonformisti. Dopo la morte del figlio, si dedicò alla scrittura a tempo pieno. Oltre a otto romanzi e a numerosi racconti, pubblicò nel 1857 la biografia dell’amica Charlotte Brontë (Castelvecchi, 2015). Morì ad Alton nel 1865.
