È una scrittrice canadese che negli anni Trenta ebbe un grandissimo successo con i romanzi della saga dei Whiteoak. Alla saga si ispirano il film Jalna (1935) e una serie televisiva per la cbc, The Witheoaks of Jalna (1972). Sebbene Jalna le regalasse fama e riconoscimenti (nel 1927, Jalna vinse un premio dall’«Atlantic Monthly»), l’autrice condusse una vita appartata, non concedendo al pubblico nulla della propria vita privata. Ciò contribuì a renderla una figura controversa, soprattutto per quanto riguarda il suo rapporto con Caroline Clement, sua sorella adottiva e, poi, sua compagna. In proposito, è uscito un film nel 2012 dal titolo The Mystery of Mazo de la Roche, per la regia di Maya Gallus.
