Le antiche traduzioni della Bibbia, tra cui la Vetus Syra, rischiano talvolta di essere trascurate o quasi ignorate non solo da un pubblico più vasto, ma anche da quello specializzato in studi biblici. Esistono sicuramente più fattori che possono spiegare tale stato di cose, ad es. la difficoltà di accadere direttamente al testo della Vetus Syra oppure la presenza di relativamente pochi studi dedicati esclusivamente ad essa, sebbene siano passati tanti anni dalla sua riscoperta nel XIX sec. d.C. Il volume presentato vuole essere una sorta di ponte che aiuta proprio ad accedere all'alquanto ricco universo della Vetus Syra. Tutto il lavoro si basa su un minuzioso confronto tra il testo greco e quello siriaco del vangelo di Marco. Grazie al suddetto confronto è stato possibile individuare oltre 550 casi, più o meno estesi, in cui i due tesi citati differiscono. Si trattava però soltanto di un primo step, a cui è seguito un tentativo di cogliere in maniera più profonda il modus operandi della nostra versione. Questo procedimento ermeneutico ha permesso di valorizzare ed enfatizzare la pluriforme ricchezza della Vetus Syra, la qualenon può essere più ridotta a un semplice pozzo da cui attingere solo un materiale utile per la critica textus.

More than twenty years after the publication of the first edition of this commentary in German, it seemed worthwhile to provide a revised and enlarged commentary in English. The bibliography reveals how much recent literature on the Johannine Letters has been published since 2000 in commentaries, monographs, and articles. The author deals with these developments in the introduction to and exegesis of the Letters. The basic understanding of the Johannine Letters, especially of the first two, has remained unchanged. This allowed the author to use much of the text from the first edition, with only a few modifications and additions. He still holds that the author of the first two Johannine Letters is responding to Christian charismatics who claimed that being "anointed" by the Spirit made belief in an "Anointed One" (Christ) superfluous and who felt that particular moral commandments did not apply to them. This line of interpretation is shared by a few contemporary authors.
