Williams (English, U. of Wales) finds that contrary to the opinions of many, British theater thrived in the period of the First World War, and not just as an instrument of propaganda. Working from theater documents and scripts as well as reviews and other press materials, Williams notes the rise in popularity and influence of the Old Vic style of staging opera and Shakespeare, a force that continues today. He gives credit to the patronage system inherent in the classical theater and operator and also allows for the contributions of the period's "less legitimate" outlets, including pantomime, music hall culture and musical comedy, as offering the lively arts to the rest of us in the perpetually cheap seats. The result is a serious reconsideration of a period once thought to be no better than a shrill presence serving only war. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
