The continually increasing interest in our own country in the History and Philosophy of Art, seems to demand information given in a more concise and rudimentary manner, and in less expensive form, than is afforded by the works of the great art-critics. Moreover, the study of Art Criticism in many of our best schools has been at a cost of great labor on the part of teachers, for the want of suitable text books, while in many instances, it has been de layed altogether on this account. This work has'been prepared with a view to supplying these needs as regards one of the arts.
