IN the present edition, bearing in mind the way in which this book came into existence and has since expanded, I felt strongly impelled to mark my appreciation of the recognition it has gained, as indicated by several editions and by translations into French, English, Russian, and Bohemian, by preparing additional chapters to remove a number of gaps still noticeable in the last issue. If I have not yielded to the temptation, it is chiefly for the reason that a larger bulk would necessarily prejudice the wider circulation of the volume. The most disturbing want has been met by the insertion of a new chapter on the economic life of primitive peoples (chapter II). The chapter differs from the more detailed one in volume 3 of the Yearbook of the Gehe Stiftung in its more summary form and in the addition of some not unimportant facts.
