In un sonetto dei suoi, fulminante e impietoso,Giuseppe Gioacchino Belli accenna a "settantadue torzi de mela" (il numero dei cardinali dell'epoca) di cui uno sarà sempre "compagno" e successore del Papa.Ma aggiunge il poeta: "Puro abbasso la testa e nunme lagno / quann'esce quarch'editto che te gela / e qui a Roma ce sto perché ogni ragno / è attaccato e vô bene a' la su' tela". Le fotografie in mostra ne Il Risorgimento dei romani. Fotografie dal 1849 al 1870 raccontano di una città estremamente complessa in cui coabitano anime diverse e persino opposte. C'è la Roma dileggiata dei papalini e dei papisti: è la corte di Pio IX con tanto di esercito schierato a difesa del suo potere temporale; c'è la Roma dei patrioti: è quella di gente che va in battaglia, al Gianicolo come a Mentana; c'è la Roma degli artisti che, con curiosità, si affaccia alla giovane arte della fotografia e all'intuizione di Monsieur Daguerre; e infine c'è la Roma popolana, indifferente per costituzione al suo stesso destino, quale la descrisse Ferdinando Gregorovius nei suoi Diari "I romani non si curano affatto del concilio. Nessuno bada alle chiacchiere in S. Pietro…". Così scrive il 7 gennaio dell'anno di grazia 1870, alba di quel 20 settembre in cui Roma divenne italiana, nonostante il grido di dolore del Pontefice contro gli invasori, "generazione perversa ed adultera" su cui s'invocava la misericordia di Dio. It is with great pleasure that the Estorick Collection brings a selection of photographs by Vittorio Sella to London for the first time in many years. Sella's images of the mountainous terrain of five continents are some of the most breathtaking and beautiful images of their kind ever taken - as well as astonishing feats from a technical point of view. From a twenty-first century standpoint, they possess an additional power to move the viewer that Sella could not have foreseen, constituting a salutary reminder of the fragility of such landscapes and the threats they face in our modern world. Although Sella's visit to Britain in 1892 resulted in a near-death experience (an accident in a train leaving him with a fractured skull) England, and in particular, London, was to be a key reference point for him throughout his career. His knowledge of the language was sufficient for him to correspond in English, his beautiful, largescale view cameras were ordered from and made in London and his photographs were distributed for sale from the capital. London also played its part in fostering Sella's reputation during his own lifetime. His work was recognised by institutions such as the Alpine Club, the Royal Geographical Society and the Royal Photographic Society. In addition, important books of his photographs were published here, including Douglas Freshfield's The Exploration of the Caucasus of 1896 and Filippo De Filippi's account of the Duke of the Abruzzi's expedition to the Karakoram and the western Himalayas in 1909, as well as the first biography of Sella. Although this reintroduction of Sella to London is long overdue, its timing is perhaps auspicious, on the cusp of the 150th anniversary of his birth next year. Our thanks for making it possible go to Mark Haworth-Booth for his advice and efforts and, of course, to Lodovico and Angelica Sella at the Fondazione Sella in Biella both for their kindness in lending the works that form this exhibition and for all their work in ensuring its realisation. Oltre settanta fotografie, prodotte in Russia negli anni Venti e Trenta, talune rigorosamente di regime ed altre del genere proibito fatte oggetto della censura staliniana e che portarono i loro autori nei terribili gulak del terrore Con la Mostra Nudo per Stalin si è inteso innanzi tutto valorizzare gli artisti russi che, a loro insaputa, fanno già parte del Gotha della fotografia accanto ai francesi, i tedeschi, gli americani. Nel contempo la Mostra si presenta come una testimonianza di come il processo culturale sia comunque inarrestabile anche nelle peggiori condizioni sociali, come è stato sotto lo stalinismo dove ogni forma artistica od espressiva in genere era soggiogata e schiacciata dal conformismo di regime. Nonostante il terrore, con il rischio della stessa vita, questi Artisti hanno lavorato animati dalla certezza che la luce sarebbe arrivata e con essa la libertà. La caduta del muro di Berlino, di cui appunto se ne commemora il ventennale, rappresenta il punto di rottura definitiva ed irreversibile di sistemi oppressivi ed oscurantisti nell'Est europeo e nella stessa Russia. Il catalogo è a cura di Larissa Anisimova e Pavel Khoroshilov, con saggi di Nicoletta Misler, Boris Groys, Aleksej Loginov.
