Computing machines, today, seems both ubiquitous and on the verge of disappearing. They evolve and metamorphose in everyday objects, from slates and phones to cars and watches, often, they become just part of the landscape. However, il was not always so; maybe, it not always be. The Third Conference on the History and Philosophy of Computing (HaPoC 2015), held in the Museum of Computing Machinery of University of Pisa, is the most apt event for addressing such musings. This volume contains the abstracts of the thalks presented during the symposium, and the polymorphism of computing is well displayed in the variety of contributes from the partecipants. The interest of the reseachers in this field display amazing variety and ingenuity, and HaPoc 2015 offers a rare opportunity to survey the current state of the art. Indeed, the conference brings together those researchers interested in the historical developments of computers as well as those reflecting on the sociological and philosophical issues related to computing. From the Middle Ages to the theoretical tendencies, the ground covered here is a large swath, ranging from logics and computability questions to the modelling of reality, from the historical antecedents of computing to topics related to the humanities and the arts.

Il volume raccoglie le testimonianze dirette dei protagonisti della nascita dell’informatica, che mosse i suoi primi passi proprio a Pisa nel 1969. La realizzazione di tale opera si inserisce all’interno del programma di Informatica50 che l’Università di Pisa sta promuovendo lungo tutto il 2019 per celebrare il primo mezzo secolo del suo corso di laurea in Informatica. Nel novembre del 2011 Pisa ha festeggiato i cinquanta anni dalla inaugurazione della Calcolatrice Elettronica Pisana (la famosa CEP), risultato finale di una felice collaborazione fra istituzioni di ricerca (oltre all’Università, l’INFN e il CNR), finanziatori pubblici (le province dell’Area Vasta) e imprenditori privati (Adriano Olivetti).Oltre a una mostra sul tema allestita al Museo degli Strumenti per il Calcolo, le celebrazioni hanno incluso un convegno dedicato alla storia dell’Informatica in Italia. Il volume contiene le relazioni presentate in quell’occasione, che spaziano dalla ricostruzione delle prime iniziative sulle calcolatrici elettroniche a Roma e a Pisa allo sviluppo dei corsi di studio e delle attività di ricerca nell’ateneo pisano e nell’area del CNR, per terminare affrontando tematiche legate alla didattica e alla divulgazione.In appendice agli atti, il volume offre una ricostruzione puntuale delle vicende del progetto che ha portato alla realizzazione della CEP. Tale ricostruzione è basata sulla documentazione storica che, in originale, è stata protagonista della mostra, e svela numerosi dettagli inediti, in particolare sulla Macchina Ridotta, il primo calcolatore progettato e costruito in Italia: quella “CEP prima della CEP” che ha dato il titolo alla mostra e al convegno.
