L'approccio di Woods alla storia americana, ha affermato lo storico Clyde N. Wilson, "è ardito, brillante, provocatorio e, cosa ancora più apprezzabile, è piacevole". L'opera, spiega l'autore nella sua prefazione, intende essere un'introduzione ad alcuni degli aspetti più controversi della storia americana - dalle origini coloniali fino all'"era Clinton" - quasi sempre presentati, anche di qua dell'oceano, con lenti ideologiche deformanti. Si potrà, allora, scoprire quanto gli ideali della guerra di indipendenza americana fossero lontani da quelli della Rivoluzione in Francia del 1789; che la cosiddetta "Guerra di secessione" non fu combattuta solo e principalmente per la schiavitù; che le politiche assistenziali nel New Deal e lo strapotere dei sindacati peggiorarono gli effetti della Grande Depressione; che l'infiltrazione comunista nelle stanze di Washington ai tempi del senatore McCarthy era reale; che la politica e la personalità di alcuni tra i presidenti più amati dall'establishment liberal - Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt o John F. Kennedy - furono tutt'altro che esenti da ambiguità.
