La Libertà delle minoranze religiose in Italia: "Un tema che ha dato senso ad una vita". Così Carlo Azeglio Ciampi ha voluto intitolare la rivisitazione di un proprio testo giovanile, sulla libertà religiosa come diritto fondamentale e inalienabile della persona. A rendere il tema appassionante per il giovane studente della Normale di Pisa al punto da farne, nel 1946, l'oggetto della propria tesi di laurea ha certamente contribuito l'esser nato a Livorno, città portuale da sempre crogiuolo di culture e tradizioni, che per ragioni storiche aveva visto il maggiore sviluppo di comunità religiose non cattoliche. Ma anche le esperienze della guerra prima e della Resistenza poi hanno acuito la sensibilità verso i diritti e acceso la passione civile. Attorno alla libertà religiosa nell'Assemblea costituente si svolse un dibattito dai toni aspri e laceranti che misero a repentaglio la nascita della giovane repubblica. A 60 anni dalla Costituzione, 80 anni dai Patti lateranensi e dalla nascita dello Stato della Città del Vaticano, giova ripercorrere attraverso le parole del giovane Ciampi le radici culturali e politiche della laicità di quello stato italiano di cui un giorno diverrà presidente.
"A theme that has given way to a life". So Mr Ciampi has wanted to call the review its own youth text on religious freedom as a fundamental and inalienable right of the individual. To make the topic fascinating for the young student of the Normale of Pisa to the point that it becomes, in 1946, the subject of his thesis has certainly contributed to be born in Livorno, a port city always melting pot of cultures and traditions, which for historical reasons had seen greater development of non-Catholic religious communities. But also the experiences of the war first and the resistance then have heightened sensitivity to civil rights and on the passion. Around the religious freedom in the constituent Assembly took a harsh tones and lacerating debate that put at risk the birth of the young Republic. In 60 years by the Constitution, 80 years by the Lateran Treaty and the rise of the Vatican City State, it is helpful to retrace through the words of the young Ciampi cultural and political roots of secularism by the Italian State of which one day will become President.
