This book offers a historical-critical reading of the exhibitions dedicated to the artistic culture of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries held in Italy during the twentieth century and evaluates its contribution to the rehabilitation of the long and articulated season that has been then variously configured under the discussed Baroque label. The reasoning on the different types of exhibitions and catalogues, the direct and indirect protagonists, the reactions of critics and the public trigger considerations on many issues and, among them, on the search for new interpretive keys, on changes in scale of value judgments, on the reasons for the comparison between the figurative arts and architecture, on the contributions and consequences of territorial explorations, on the relationship between Universities and Superintendents, on the awareness of protection and restoration in our country, exhibitions such as experimenting with museum orders, osmosis, interference or incompatibility between exhibitions and museums. Looking at the exhibitions, the book discusses the times and methods of making art history in Italy in the last century and testifies to incisive ways of reflecting on the history of art today.
