This is the story of a journey to discover the United States, following the accession of the author in 1936 to the project of the Farm Security Administration: collect photographic evidence of "the other America", that of the degradation and misery. After browsing in New York and Washington, the reality of the poor neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, blacks and whites have a disruptive effect in shaping the writing: evocative style of the early essays gives way to an objective language, ticks acquire aesthetic rigour and sobriety. The trip becomes research, commitment and interest in the reality of everyday life, for work and Union struggles; the border passage translates to openness to new ways of thinking.
