I Beatles in India: Nel periodo che va dall'Estate dell'amore a San Francisco e l'offensiva del Tet dei vietcong in Vietnam, i Beatles, Donovan, un paio di Beach Boys, Mia Farrow (allora signora Sinatra) e pochi altri "figli dei fiori" si riunirono in un ashram ai piedi dell'Himalaya per meditare con il guru Maharishi, che diffuse in Occidente la Meditazione Trascendentale. Fu un evento seguito nel mondo e salutato come il primo incontro tra la cultura pop occidentale e il misticismo orientale. Ma ciò che avvenne all'interno di questo santuario ben protetto è rimasto in parte e a lungo misterioso e oggetto di voci e speculazioni. I Beatles ad esempio dissero che scrissero lì alcune delle loro più importanti canzoni, eppure John Lennon ne uscì amareggiato. Centinaia di giornalisti assediarono per giorni il santuario, ma uno solo fu ammesso all'interno: Lewis Lapham, un giovane esponente del movimento del new journalism, autore di alcuni tra i reportage più memorabili sulla guerra del Vietnam e sulla rivolta giovanile. Ne nacque questo racconto di cosa veramente successe in quei giorni, degli entusiasmi e delle incomprensioni dalle due parti, del confronto concreto tra due culture e due mondi che ancora oggi s'incrociano, si attraggono e si respingono.
In the period from the summer of love in San Francisco and the Tet offensive of the vietcong in Viet Nam, the Beatles, Donovan, a couple of Beach Boys, Mia Farrow (then Mrs. Sinatra) and a few other "flower children" came together in an ashram in the foothills of the Himalayas to meditate with Maharishi guru, who popularized transcendental meditation in the West. It was an event in the world and hailed as the first meeting between the Western pop culture and Eastern mysticism. But what happened within this Sanctuary well-protected remained partly mysterious, long-and the subject of rumors and speculation. The Beatles for example said he wrote there some of their most important songs, yet John Lennon was bitter. Hundreds of reporters laid siege to the shrine for days, but only one was allowed inside: Lewis Lapham, a young member of the new journalism movement, author of some of the most memorable reportage on the Viet Nam war and youthful rebellion. It was this tale of what really happened in those days, the enthusiasms and misunderstandings between the two parties, of practical comparison between two cultures and two worlds which still meet, attract and repel each other.
