Richard Wagner (1813-1883) fu compositore, poeta, librettista, regista teatrale, direttore d’orchestra e saggista tedesco. È riconosciuto come uno dei più importanti musicisti di ogni epoca, nonché massimo esponente del romanticismo musicale. Tra le sue composizioni più importanti, non si possono non citare L’olandese volante, L’anello del Nibelungo, Tristano e Isotta, Parsifal e l’Idillio di Sigfrido. Fu anche un prolifico saggista; tra i suoi testi più famosi: L’arte e la rivoluzione (1849); L’opera d’arte dell’avvenire (1849); Opera e dramma (1851).
