To-day Zen as a living faith can be found in its pure form only among the Japanese Buddhists. You cannot find it in the so-called Gospel of Buddha anymore than you can find Unitarianism in the Pentateuch, nor can you find it in China and India any more than you can find life in fossils of bygone ages. It is beyond all doubt that it can be traced back to Shakya Muni himself, nay, even to pre-Buddhistic times, because Brahmanic teachers practised Dhyana, or Meditation, from earliest times.

Nel 1913, una dozzina di anni prima del celeberrimo tentativo di proporre il Buddhismo all’Occidente di D.T. Suzuki col suo fondamentale Saggi sul Buddhismo Zen (1927-1934), un altro importante studioso giapponese provò a fornire una lettura “nazionale” di questa religione, e dello Zen in particolar modo, che fosse tuttavia comprensibile e, nel contempo, suggestiva anche per il lettore straniero. Ecco che La religione dei samurai di Kaiten Nukariya, che qui si presenta in prima traduzione italiana e che venne molto apprezzato da Julius Evola, si attesta come un prezioso documento dal triplice valore: politico, religioso e storico. Partendo da un dettagliato resoconto sulla nascita e sulla diffusione di questa religione, l’Autore mostra come lo Zen possa essere una forma vitale per cimentarsi con l’esistenza, sia da un punto di vista strettamente spirituale, sia pratico. In appendice, è inclusa la traduzione dello stesso Nukariya del Gen nin ron (Saggio sull’origine dell’Uomo) del cinese Tsung Mih (774-841), che egli utilizza quale sostegno per le proprie tesi sul Buddhismo Mahayana e la sua corrente Zen. In appendice L’origine dell’Uomo di Tsung Mih
